Background of the Elbert County Courthouse and Clerk of Court

The historic courthouse in downtown Elbert County was constructed in 1894 and is the third courthouse built for Elbert County. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980. The courthouse was designed and constructed in the Richardson Romanesque style with locally quarried Elberton granite within its foundation and walls. It stands as a symbol of justice and service of the community for well over 130 years.

The Elbert County Clerk of Court's office serves as the record keeper for the Superior, State and Juvenile Courts as well as the Appeal Administrator for the Board of Equalization. The Elbert County Clerk of Court's office has 3 public terminals available for legal research for Civil, Criminal and Real Estate/Lien Records.
*Real estate records held in the courthouse date back to 1790.

Limitations of the Clerk's Office

Per statute, the Clerks of the Superior Courts are prohibited from practicing law in their own or another's name, as a partner or otherwise, in any court except in their own case.
